New Philippine Consul General in Shanghai Welcomed
The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai welcomed the arrival of Mr. Josel F. Ignacio on 12 April 2021, as its sixth Consul General. Consul General Ignacio was most recently Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs, in which capacity he was intimately involved in policy-making on larger regional affairs and to fostering and managing Philippines-China relations.
“It is privilege, opportunity and responsibility to be named to this important post”, said the Consul General. ‘I relish the chance to lead the Consulate General in serving Filipinos and our clients in Shanghai, Anhui, Hubei, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Working under Manila’s guidance and in concert with our Embassy in Beijing, I am keen to build on my predecessors’ work and hone a strong country team to drive forward economic diplomacy and forge Philippine partnerships in this bustling commercial and financial center”.
A career Foreign Service official since 1997, he has served in various capacities at headquarters in Manila. His previous overseas assignments were at the Philippine Embassy and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo. The Consul General majored in Psychology at the University of the Philippines and in Philosophy at San Carlos Seminary.
First opened in 1948-1949 and re-opened in 2002, the Consulate General’s jurisdiction covers the Shanghai Metropolis, as well as the adjacent provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The Philippine Trade and Investment Center and Office of the Department of Tourism round off a robust Philippine country team in Shanghai. END
