FILIPINO AND CHINESE EDUCATORS CALL ON CONSULATE GENERAL ON PROPOSED PHILIPPINE SCHOOL IN SHANGHAI
Consul Marlowe A. Miranda (3rd from left) leads Consulate General officials in meeting with Ms. Carmel Feliciano (4th from left) and Chinese partners to discuss the proposal for a Philippine school in Shanghai.
Shanghai, 22 April 2021 – A Philippine international school targeting Filipinos, Chinese and other nationalities may soon rise again in Shanghai under a project proudly reported by its proponents to the Philippine Consulate General in the city.
Shanghai-based Filipino teacher and educator Ms. Carmel Feliciano called on Consulate General Officials on 22 April, accompanied by co-proponents Mr. Jie Zhou, a professor of English literature at the Shanghai International Studies University, and Ms. Fu Ping Ying, who is helping with conceptualization and set-up.
A Philippine international school offering pre-school to secondary-level curricula will mean a richer learning environment for Filipino children and youth in Shanghai, many of whom are currently limited to homeschooling.
In 2003, Ms. Feliciano had co-founded with another Filipino the Shanghai International Day Care Center, which quickly expanded into a larger Shanghai International Academy offering high-quality and affordable pre-school to high school education. Regrettably, circumstances forced its closure in 2010.
Armed with lessons and experience, Ms. Feliciano and her partners are looking to build a more enduring institution, responsive to both the needs of today’s students and the exacting standards set by local authorities. Just as significantly, Ms. Feliciano is keen to educate enrollees in subjects taught under Philippine and Chinese curricula, seeking the necessary accreditation from Philippine and Chinese education authorities for the purpose.
The Philippine Consulate General was represented by Consul Marlowe A. Miranda, Consul Conrado B. Demdem, Jr., Trade Representative Mr. Mario Tani, and Tourism Officer Mr. Ireneo Reyes. They welcomed the proposal and offered to extend appropriate support for the undertaking. END
