Filipino Community in Shanghai celebrate PH independence and foster unity through sports
SHANGHAI – Heeding the Bagong Pilipinas call for unity among Filipinos, close to 20 Filipino organizations in the Chinese financial capital and nearby provinces bonded over sports and friendly competition in a meaningful activity commemorating the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on 16 June 2024 at the GBA Sports Center in Pudong District.
Conceptualized and hosted by the umbrella organization Filipino Community in Shanghai (FILCOMSHA), the “Bayanihan Sports Fiesta: Celebrating Freedom and Unity” had five teams competing in badminton, basketball, and volleyball during the day-long activity. The teams also showed their energy and creativity via a cheering competition.
Officials of the Philippine Country Team in Shanghai, consisting of the Consulate General, Philippine Trade and Investment Center, and Department of Tourism Office, gamely took part in the day’s colorful and exciting program.
Consul General Dinno M. Oblena delivered his speech on the occasion, highlighting what this year’s theme of “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” encapsulates, as well as mentioning the fine traits of the Filipino and Philippine culture that have brought the community together for the event. He then read the Independence Day message of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.
FILCOMSHA President Michelle Teope-Shen delivered her remarks to open the event.
Further adding to the Filipino flavor of the festivities, a Filipino vendor market took place parallel to the event, selling Philippine dishes, delicacies, and other items.
The event closed with the awarding of prizes to winners in the sports competitions as well as for best muse and best in cheering. END

PCG holds flag-raising ceremony in commemoration of 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence
SHANGHAI – The Philippine Country Team in Shanghai joined Filipinos and Philippine government agencies around the world in the commemoration of the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with the holding of a solemn flag-raising ceremony on 12 June 2024 at the Main Hall of the Consulate General.
Consul General Dinno M. Oblena led officials and personnel of the Philippine Consulate General, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC)-Shanghai, and the Philippine Department of Tourism Office (PDOT)-Shanghai at the ceremony. Family members of personnel also attended.
Following the singing of the National Anthem, Consul General Oblena delivered brief remarks expounding on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan” (Freedom, Future, History).
Personnel thereafter listened to the messages for the occasion of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo, and Secretary of Trade and Industry Alfredo Pascual, as read by PCG Officials. The video message of Secretary Manalo was played.
A Filipino breakfast for the personnel closed the morning’s rites. END.

Shanghai PCG hosts reception on 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence
SHANGHAI, 11 June 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai hosted a reception to commemorate the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on 11 June 2024 at The Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Shanghai.
The reception was graced by Deputy Secretary-General (Mr.) Liu Ping of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Vice Chair (Ms.) Fei Jian of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, Vice Chair (Mr.) Yin Guiyin of the Proposal Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Ms. Yan Yanqiu, Level II Inspector of the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office.
Other Municipal Government officials, members of the consular corps of Shanghai, and guests from the business community and representatives of Filipino community organizations from Shanghai and the larger Yangtze River Delta Region attended the event.
In his remarks at the reception, Philippine Consul General in Shanghai Dinno M. Oblena highlighted what the year’s theme of “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” encapsulates and how the Philippines has progressed 126 years on. He also touched on Philippines-China economic relations, specifically on Philippines-Shanghai relations, with four decades of sister-city ties between Manila and Shanghai and the presence of Philippine companies in Shanghai and nearby provinces in the fields of food, manufacturing, banking and finance, real estate, and electronics.
As videos of Philippine tourism destinations and economic thrusts played, guests were treated to a buffet of delectable Filipino dishes such as adobo, kinilaw, crispy pata, lumpia, ginataang hipon, and pansit guisado, paired with desserts such as halo-halo, leche flan and pandan-mango rolls. END
