24 April 2021, Shanghai – Officials of the Consulate General of the Philippines came out in force to support the Philippine Chamber of Business and Professionals in Shanghai (PhilChamSH)’s first event for 2021.
The forum, “The Philippine Diaspora: Making the Best of Who You Are, Where You Are”, marked the resumption of PhilChamSH’s activities for the Filipino Community after a two-year hiatus, as restrictions gradually eased in Shanghai.
New Philippine Consul General Josel F. Ignacio addressed the event, his first major engagement with the Filipino Community since taking up his post. Hewing to the Greek etymological roots of “diaspora”, the Consul General paid tribute to the growth of the Filipino community in Shanghai, its adjacent areas, and globally as “sowing the seeds of Philippine identity, culture and talent wherever they are.”
The forum’s three featured speakers, drawn from the fields of marketing, entrepreneurship and advertising, shared their formulae and personal experiences building successful careers, business ventures and partnerships in China.
Adams Fan, founder of leading boutique creative and advertising agency F5 Shanghai, offered his take on building “guanxi” – the unique Chinese concept of relationships and networks crucial to success in the country
Shanghai-based multimedia artist and designer Nicole Teng, meanwhile, traced her journey from corporate marketing work, art gallery owner, artist-designer and later, founder of an expanding café business, providing an inspiring lesson in building and growing a brand that has attracted major F&B investors and partners in the hospitality business.
Rounding off the forum was veteran marketing director Lylah Juinio, who shared her perspectives on cultural traits and finding success in foreign settings.
The event, attended by over 60 people, closed with an open forum and the introduction of PhilChamSH’s newly inducted officers and board members. The event was sponsored by Oishi, led by its Shanghai-based executives, Mr. Larry Chan and Mr. Archie Chan. END

Taizhou City Seeks to Boost Friendship, Trade and Investment Links with Philippines
20 April 2021, Shanghai – Taizhou City, a fast-growing metropolis and vibrant industrial center in Zhejiang Province, is keen on boosting trade and investment ties with the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.
This was the principal message of Taizhou Municipal People’s Government Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) Director Jin Jingzhong in a courtesy call on Consul General Josel F. Ignacio yesterday.
With a GDP of RMB 520 billion (USD 80 billion) in 2020, Taizhou City’s economy ranks among the top five cities of Zhejiang province. It takes pride in being the birthplace of Chinese automobile manufacturer Geely. Having become an “export-oriented city”, it now trains its sights on encouraging its local enterprises to “go abroad and invest overseas”, according to Director Jin.
The Consul General welcomed Taizhou City’s interest, which he said would further boost the vigorous economic engagement between the Philippines and China these past five years. He expressed the Consulate General’s readiness to facilitate contacts and partnerships with Philippine counterparts. Philippine Trade and Investment Center Representative Mario Tani, for his part, cited opportunities in the automobile, electronics, agriculture, and food sectors. Taking note of Taizhou City’s record in cultivating industry while preserving its natural environment, Consul Conrado Demdem underscored the potential of sharing green development models as a further bridge toward engaging Philippine counterparts. New Philippine Consul General in Shanghai Welcomed
The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai welcomed the arrival of Mr. Josel F. Ignacio on 12 April 2021, as its sixth Consul General. Consul General Ignacio was most recently Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs, in which capacity he was intimately involved in policy-making on larger regional affairs and to fostering and managing Philippines-China relations.
“It is privilege, opportunity and responsibility to be named to this important post”, said the Consul General. ‘I relish the chance to lead the Consulate General in serving Filipinos and our clients in Shanghai, Anhui, Hubei, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Working under Manila’s guidance and in concert with our Embassy in Beijing, I am keen to build on my predecessors’ work and hone a strong country team to drive forward economic diplomacy and forge Philippine partnerships in this bustling commercial and financial center”.
A career Foreign Service official since 1997, he has served in various capacities at headquarters in Manila. His previous overseas assignments were at the Philippine Embassy and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo. The Consul General majored in Psychology at the University of the Philippines and in Philosophy at San Carlos Seminary.
First opened in 1948-1949 and re-opened in 2002, the Consulate General’s jurisdiction covers the Shanghai Metropolis, as well as the adjacent provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The Philippine Trade and Investment Center and Office of the Department of Tourism round off a robust Philippine country team in Shanghai. END
