Consul General Wilfredo R. Cuyugan was represented by Vice Consul André Peter C. Estanislao who delivered opening remarks which highlighted the conference’s theme and the longstanding historical bonds that link China and the Philippines together. In his remarks, Vice Consul Estanislao mentioned the Philippines’ dynamic and active role in the United Nations from its inception to the present time. He also shared some snippets of interesting history on Philippines-China relations such as trading in commerce in the 10th century and the visit of the King of Sulu, Paduku Patala to the Ming Emperor Yongle in the 15th century. He also invited the participants in the Conference to visit the Philippines and experience the country’s warmth and hospitality. On a personal note, the Vice Consul gave his piece of advice to the students who intend to pursue their path in the Foreign Service:
“I assure you that the excellent days bathed in the sunlight of peace, hope and service to the motherland will eclipse all the sad ones. You will meet many very interesting people, forge excellent and long-lasting friendships with people from all walks of life, and gain experience that is unique and sometimes, even life-changing”.
University officials led by Donghua University Vice President Liu Chunhong, faculty, students and members of the Consular Corps in Shanghai were present during the event.
